PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DURING COVID-19 AND SOCIAL DISTANCING

COVID-19 HAS SIGNIFICANTLY DISRUPTED ALL AREAS OF LIFE AND THREATENS HEALTH.

The American Physical Therapy Association supports following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for remaining safe and avoiding unnecessary exposure, which includes staying home and distancing yourself from others when possible.

PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO STOP BEING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.

Getting the recommended amount of daily physical activity for your age and ability helps to maintain and to improve overall health, and it is perhaps even more important during stressful times like these.

First, follow CDC guidelines for personal health habits to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses. Then, take advantage of the following tips and resources that you can use to maintain your health and fitness while doing your part to stop the spread of the virus.

DO NOT STOP MOVING AND TAKING CARE OF YOUR ACTIVE HEALTH.

Something to admire about humankind is our ability to adapt quickly and help one another during difficult times. People have found innovative ways to stay in contact with friends and family and share their expertise on easy to make meals, workouts for the home and how to work with children who are quarantined at home and most likely frightened and frustrated with the quarantine.

It’s a good time to try to stick to school work, but not yell at your already anxious children. Place wonderful books around the house and read together. Hug your children, make meals with them and let them feel they are safe in their own home, a safe haven from the world.

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO DO WHILE IN QUARANTINE:

GET OUTSIDE

If you have a family member or friend quarantined with you, go together and keep each other accountable.

EXERCISE

Get your endorphins going, this is important for overall happiness and we need to stay happy in seclusion.

ONLINE WORKOUTS

Many gyms and companies are offering FREE online workout options, find your jam and get involved.

CLEAN YOUR HOME

The Spring Clean | Dig into those pesky nooks and crannies. Toss out the things that hold you back and add clutter. Beautify your space.

SOCIAL APPS

Download the Marco Polo App and see one another via video chats with friends and family outside of your quarantine zone

JUST DO IT

Consider starting projects or hobbies you felt you never had time for.

CHECK-IN

Check-in on friends who might be having a hard time.

EXPLORE

Get outside and explore the mountains, trails, and landscape around you. Go at odd times to avoid exposure to others. If you do encounter other people, remember the six foot boundary regulation, maintain movement to prevent exposure times and keep them to a minimum.

READ

Find new books to read or reread your favorites again.

PUZZLE TIME

Find something you enjoy and challenge yourself.

LEARN AN INSTRUMENT

Pick up an instrument you have always wanted to learn to play.

LEARN A LANGUAGE

There are numerous apps that will help you learn almost any language you are interested in and start devoting time for your new skill.

SLEEP

Get the rest you need. Stay well rested and happy as a sleep-deprived and anxious immune system is more easily compromised.

The entire experience seems like a dream if you have not been affected by it personally, but it will take ALL of us to slam the staff down and say, “NONE SHALL PASS.” Self isolation protects those we love by decreasing the spread of COVID-19. Heroes include all those who stay at home to keep their communities safe.”
